The State Correctional Institution at Graterford was constructed in 1923 in Skippack Township, Montgomery County on over 1,700 acres of land purchased from local land owners. The institution holds over 3,000 inmates and over 1,200 staff members. Some programs at Graterford include academic and vocational education, restorative justice programs, Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, Batterer's Intervention, and community work programs like the Equine Rescue Program where inmates care for older horses that were abandoned or scheduled to be euthanized.

In June, 2014, Graterford State Prison hosted a TEDx event focused around the theme of "Concrete Visions".
